    II Marine Expeditionary Force

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Marines and sailors with 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division invited their spouses out for a morning of friendly competition during the unit’s Jane Wayne Day aboard Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, May 20, 2015.

“It’s important for our spouses to get a chance to experience some of the stuff we do because it gives them a little insight on what we do on a regular day and builds unit morale,” said Sgt. Kenny Tabares, the career planner with the unit. “When we have support and understanding from our families back home, that allows our Marines to come out here and do the jobs we’re asking them to do without distraction.”

Spouses had the opportunity to shoot the .45-caliber pistol and M9 Beretta pistol, shotguns, M4 Carbine rifle and M249 SAW during a live-fire range exercise.

After exhausting their rounds on the range, participants got a chance to rappel off the tower. They secured their rope-made harnesses with the help from Marines before ascending the ladder to the top of the tower.

The spouses were nervous to rappel off the side of the tower, but the Marines shouted words of encouragement to each other’s wives as they made their way down the tower.

“This is the first Jane Wayne Day I’ve been to and it’s been a great experience,” Tabares said. “I know we always say that the Marine Corps is a family, but this really brought that to life because we were able to bring our wives in to meet other couples and compete in the different events we had going on. “

The last competitive event for the day was a race in a Combat Rubber Raiding Craft in Courthouse Bay. Teams of eight carried the boats into the bay and raced around a target point by paddling and using teamwork to communicate commands.

Tabares’ wife, Estefany, said her favorite part of the day was racing through the bay in the CRRCs because having other teams out there made it more competitive.

The day ended at the office with a cookout for the Marines, sailors and their families.

“These events are great way to make friends, which helps a lot because we all rely on each other,” Estefany said. “When we first moved to Camp Lejeune, we were newlyweds and my husband was given orders to deploy. I remember leaning on the support of the other spouses in our unit while he was gone, which made the time go by faster. It’s nice to meet other people who understand what Marine families go through.”
