RYE, N.Y. - Marines made their entrance known to the residents of Rye, New York, in an aerial showcase featuring Marines from Charlie Co., 1st Battalion, 6th Marines and those from Special-Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force-New York at Playland Amusement Park, May 24, 2015.

Demonstrating the Marine Corps’ readiness capabilities through air and land, the local residents received an understanding of who Marines are and what the Marine Corps stands for.

“Today we’re representing the Marine Corps, showing the good folks of New York what we do for them,” said Pfc. Joe Whitcomb, a machine gunner with Charlie Co., 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment and native of Fort Myers, Florida. “From the air to guys on the ground, we are putting on a display showing the public what we provide to others overseas.”

Many families came to see the aircraft, and some came to see what role the Marines have from riflemen to crew chiefs for the CH-46 Sea Knight.

“It’s fun, see young kids trying on our gear, lifting our rifles and actually seeing what we do,” said Cpl. Nicolas Brewer, a squad leader with Charlie Co., 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment. “Give a view of everything we’re doing and allowing the people to see the aircraft and get on it.”

Many veterans came out to the showcasing wanting to see the Marines and what they stand for.

“There are veterans that come here and share their experience,” said Whitcomb. “I say thank you to them; they have seen the real deal and know what freedom stands for.”
Residents from Rye and those in attendance embraced the Marines’ hospitality expressing their gratitude for what the Corps has and continues to do.

“It reminds me that this is why I joined after what happened in 9/11,” Whitcomb said.

Fleet Week New York has been going on for many years, giving those who want to join and serve their nation a firsthand look as to what it means to be part of an organization, thus understanding the mission and capabilities that each Marine is part of.
