NEW YORK - Members of Boy Scout Troop 74 of Sacred Heart Church visited the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile-destroyer USS Barry (DDG 52) in Staten Island as part of Fleet Week New York, May 24.

Quartermaster 1st Class David Harrison led the tour and detailed what life is like for a Sailor in today’s Navy for the Scouts. At the conclusion of the tour, some of the Scouts participated in lowering the national ensign during an evening colors ceremony.

“This is a great way for the Scouts to show respect to veterans,” said Scout leader Rita Petrizzo. “It’s an honor to be given the tour by the Sailors.”

Troop 74 often participates in local volunteer opportunities, outdoor activities, and other community based events, including learning more about the Navy during Fleet Week New York.

“This tour shows the shared values between the Boy Scouts and the U.S. Navy,” said Weapons Officer LT. Jason Highley. “In 10 years, some of these boys may be Sailors, who knows, one of them may even be my department head.”

Fleet Week New York, now in its 27th year, is the city’s time-honored celebration of the sea services. It is an unparalleled opportunity for the citizens of New York and the surrounding tri-state area to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, as well as witness firsthand the latest capabilities of today’s maritime services. The weeklong celebration has been held nearly every year since 1984.
