EAGLE OAKS GOLF COURSE, N.J. – Marines with 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment and Assault Amphibian Battalion, 2nd Marine Division played in a golf tournament with members of Eagle Oaks Golf and Country Club in Farmingdale, New Jersey, as part of Honor Day hosted by the course on May 21, 2015.

“Those military members who are serving this country are not just names, there not just ranks but are sons and daughters of the community,” Pietri said. “We had a few service members from the local community and it really helped the community connect, so when decisions are made it really does affect the community as well.”

New York City is welcoming service members to the tri-state area for Fleet Week New York 2015. Joint services showcase their capabilities and pay thanks to the welcoming.

Members at Eagle Oaks Country Club hosted a scramble tournament with service members on teams with the members of the club in appreciation for joint services and a day of honoring.

“It is a great feeling to have Marines and sailors play golf with us today,” said Mark Walko, a member of the club. “We could not say thank you enough to the service members for the sacrifices they have made.”

Members and service members were split into teams of four and played 18 holes, with a banquette dinner party following the tournament.

“This is exactly what fleet week is for,” said Capt. Francisco Pietri, the base operations officer with 1st Marine Corps district in Garden City, New York. “It shows the community that the Marine Corps is not just those overseas fighting for our freedom. This personalizes who we are and what that individual service member is and what they do and who they are as a person.”

During the dinner party following the tournament, members of the country club set up a POW/MIA table with an empty seat to honor those lost during war. Service members marched out into the dining room and stood at attention as a club member said a few words to honor the fallen before having a moment of silence.

“We respect everything service members do for our country,” Walko said. “It is an amazing feeling having them here with us and we plan on keeping the Honor Day golf tournament tradition around for many years to come.”

Service members enjoyed their time with the members and left with great memories.

“Every Marine I have talked to has been impressed by how great the event was,” said Pietri. “They came in here with high expectations and the whole country club and staff far exceeded all of them.”

Fleet Week New York helps bring the community and military together so show and learn what they are capable of. Events like the Honor Day golf tournament bring club and service members together on a personal level through fun and excitement.
