    II Marine Expeditionary Force

NEW YORK - Marines and sailors took part in an open-ship tour of the USS San Antonio (LPD-17) May 23, 2015, during Fleet Week New York. The Marines and sailors had a variety of booths, displays, an aircraft and guided tours set up throughout the ship for the general public to visit and inquire about what capabilities the sea services provide.

Fleet Week is the city’s celebration of the sea services and has been held nearly every year since 1984. It provides citizens of New York City and the surrounding tri-state area an opportunity to meet Marines, sailors and Coast Guardsmen, as well as see the capabilities of today’s maritime services.

Marines offered static displays of different weapons systems and gear typically worn in a combat environment. These displays brought attention from people of many backgrounds and interests to include children, families, future servicemembers and veterans.

Vietnam veteran Adolph Kalenner and his grandson wanted to see what a new ship had to offer compared to when he served in the U.S. Navy in 1966.

“He wanted to see the ship, but maybe it was more for me,” Kalenner said. “I served on the USS Duluth (LPD-6) in ‘66 to ’68, it was a great duty, a great crew, and a great ship; I wanted to come back and see what the new LPDs looked like.”

All guests aboard the USS San Antonio were given the opportunity to ask questions to Marines who are currently serving on active duty. Marines were able to answer any questions and give an insight of their jobs based on their first-hand experiences.

Cpl. Jan Criadorojas, a Hollywood, Florida, native and infantryman with the 1st Battalion 6th Marine Regiment in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, said he enjoyed getting to show the people of New York what the he and his Marines do.

“It seems like these people appreciate what we do when we put them in our flak jackets,” Criadorojas said. “They’re doing the same thing in Times Square, and people are coming up and are really curious about what we do.”

It was a significant moment for Criadorojas when he realized kids were interested in what he and his Marines do on a day-to-day basis. It was great getting the opportunity to make an impression on local youth, Criadorojas said.
