NEW YORK - The Navy League of the United States was founded in 1902 and was encouraged by President Theodore Roosevelt. Today, the league works to support sea service members and their families in over 240 councils around the world.

For Fleet Week New York 2015, the Navy League New York Council hosted a harbor cruise for Marines, sailors and coast guardsmen on the Majestic Princess, May 21, 2015. The cruise included a buffet dinner, entertainment by a DJ, a performance by the United Service Organizations show troupe and a view of Manhattan and the harbor.

“I had a great time,” said Chief Petty Officer Dan Piccola, an electronics technician aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Spencer. “I spoke with the people a part of the Navy League. There are amazing veterans. We’ve really been having a great time at Fleet Week.”

Lance Cpl. Patryk Piontek, an amphibious assault vehicle crewman with 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, said that the cruise helped bond the sea services both junior and senior ranks.

“It helped build a better relationship between the lower and higher ranks. It’s not often that lance corporals get to go out and be with captains and gunnery sergeants. Out here on the boat I got to know them and they got to know me,” said Piontek. “Now we know a little about each other’s struggles and we’re able to feed off of each other and learn from each other.”

Both Piontek and Piccola agreed that being a part of Fleet Week means more than just showing the community the capabilities of the sea services, but about building a strong partnership with them as well.

“They’re very supportive of us and I’ve had nothing but great experiences with every single one of them,” Piontek said.

“It’s amazing to see how New York and the sea services can all come together. I hope that the community can appreciate the work that we do and I hope Fleet Week can continue to build the knowledge that they have on what we do and who we are,” Piccola said.

Fleet Week New York runs from May 20-26, 2015. With Fleet Week well underway, citizens of New York and the surrounding tri-state area can still come to upcoming events to include military band concerts and displays, Veterans appreciation day, USO Operation That’s My Dress and more.
