NEW YORK - Marines and sailors from various units across the United States come together every year for Fleet Week New York 2015. Now in its 27th year, it is an invaluable opportunity for the local population of New York and the surrounding tri-state area to meet Marines, sailors and coast guardsmen, and to learn about the latest capabilities of today’s maritime services.

Fleet Week is filled with various events that allow the service members to get out into the public, such events as the National Arts Club dinner. The dinner was hosted for the various sea services and members of the NAC at the NAC headquarters, May 20, 2015.

Mary Cava, hospitality chairman for the NAC said that the members are grateful and truly appreciate the effort and sacrifice the service members have made to keep them safe.

“Thank you to the military for keeping us safe, because it’s only in times of peace that art can flourish,” said Cava. “So every year during Fleet Week we welcome [service members] here to show our appreciation.”

The event started with a cocktail hour which allowed the service members and members of the NAC to become acquainted. Cocktail hour was followed by dinner and a show performed by the United Service Organizations show troupe.

Sergeant Mikal Little, an ammunition technician with 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, said the dinner is a good way to broadcast what the NAC does for their community and it brings the military into their realm of fine arts.

“It helps educate us on the fine arts. Walking around here I realize it builds culture and history in the art community and bringing the military here broadens our [knowledge] on the culture, not only of New York City, but to the fine arts community as well,” said Little.

Little and Cava both agreed that the night was a success on both ends of the spectrum.

“I had a great time,” Little said. “Meeting the veterans that were here tonight and just getting around during cocktail hour was pretty fun I thought.”

“We are thrilled to have them here because they get to see part of old New York, even if they aren’t from this area. This is a little treasure and we’re very glad to have shared it,” said Cava. “This is our second home and we hope it becomes theirs.”
