VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Service members at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek/Fort Story honored 92 fallen heroes during a Bell Tolling Ceremony hosted at the base chapel May 21.

Those being honored all had some affiliation to JEBLCFS and perished after 9/11. One toll of the bell was rendered for each fallen service member, as their name was read and their photo displayed.

“It’s an honor,” Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class Gregg Swartzenberg, bell ringer for the event. “These are our brothers and sisters who made the ultimate sacrifice.”

During the ceremony, Capt. Frank Hughlett, commanding officer, JEBLCFS, discussed the importance of honoring those who have passed by continuing to speak their names.

“A person dies twice, the physical death along with the last time their name is spoken,” said Hughlett. “This ceremony keeps those we have lost alive.”

Multiple service members currently stationed at JEBLCFS were given the honor of reading the names during the ceremony. Among those reading the names was Capt. Pete Vasely, commander, Naval Special Warfare Group Two. Vasely expressed his sincere gratitude for the chance to read the names of Sailors involved in the Navy’s Special Warfare commands.

“It’s a tremendous honor and I am very appreciative of Capt. Hughlett for letting us be a part of this ceremony,” said Vasely. “This is not just for our fallen, but for their families who continue to sacrifice every day.”
