AURORA, Colo. - The weather is starting to warm up, the sun is coming out, and for many, this means it’s time to bring their motorcycles out of storage, dust them off and enjoy the summer weather on two wheels.
Although feeling the wind in your hair can be enjoyable, riding motorcycles also brings many increased risks. The 460th Space Communications Squadron made an effort to combat these risks by having a motorcycle safety day.
“The main purpose of the ride was to bring awareness to safety and mentorship to newer riders,” said Tech. Sgt. Michael Moore, 460th SCS communications focal point NCO in charge. “It’s the riding season and we needed to bring attention to all the hazards.”
Team Buckley members parked outside of the communications squadron building, had employees from local motorcycle shops service check their bikes, gave safety briefings and then took off for a 100-mile ride from off base to start the summer season off on the right foot, safely.
In the past, the Air Force recognized the spring and summer months as the Critical Days of Summer. Recently, that has been replaced and the Air Force has introduced the Quest for Zero program.
“Quest for Zero is more focused on on-duty mishaps,” said Gregory Q. Walker, Buckley AFB safety and occupational health manager. “We hope that it will bleed over into preventing off-duty mishaps.”
There’s many other ways to stay safe this summer besides having your motorcycle serviced. Team Buckley members should always:
- Wear personal protective equipment
- Ensure everyone is properly trained
- Keep work areas clear of hazards
- Stay hydrated, especially if working outside
Each month, new Quest for Zero information is available at the 460th Space Wing safety office. They will also be hosting motorcycle safety classes through the summer. For more information, contact the safety office at 720-847-7233.
