ARLINGTON, Va. - Dashing Prince Charmings wearing Marine dress blues and girls looking adorably like princesses lit up the Sheraton at Pentagon City May 16 during a Daddy Daughter dance held by Headquarters and Service Battalion, Headquarters Marine Corps, Henderson Hall.
“I’ve got four daughters here,” said Master Sgt. Jeremy Owens, who was one of the organizers of the event. “These are the memories they will take forward.”
On hand for the event were 106 daughters and their dads, including Maj. Jeremiah Hughes and his daughter, Grace, 3.
“I love it,” he said. “I was deployed for the second year of her life. I’m still her Prince Charming.”
Col. Holden Dunham spent time sweeping his daughter, Gwennie, 7-and-a-half, around the dance floor.
“These opportunities are so rare, you’ve got to take advantage of them,” he said.
When asked what she liked best about the evening, Gwennie had a one word answer as she held her dad’s hand.
“Everything,” she said with a wide smile.
In addition to dancing to some of today’s hottest hits, the girls participated in several party games, including a rousing game of musical chairs and limbo. Lauren Lloyd, 9, took home a grab bag of items for winning the musical chairs competition.
“I’m totally excited,” she said.
The dad’s participated in a hula hoop contest to see who could make it twirl the longest. Master Gunnery Sgt. Glen Gilmore took the top honor in that competition to good natured ribbing from his fellow Marines.
“The motion was going,” he said with a laugh as he claimed his prize.
