SAVANNAH, Ga. – Thirty married couples from the 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment ended a busy week of training with a “Date Night”, May 15.
Through the Army Strong Bonds program and hosted by the 1st Ranger Battalion Chaplain’s Office, the one night event was an opportunity for couples to access free childcare, spend quality time together, and receive practical training on how to better meet each other’s needs.
“This kind of event does a lot for Rangers and their families,” said Capt. Joel Vinson, 1st Ranger Battalion. “With busy deployment and training schedules, it’s easy for couples to feel disconnected. The ‘Date Night’ program gets husbands and wives to actually go out and have a good time together, while receiving a lot of real help and advice on how to build a strong marriage.”
The event took place at Collins Quarter, a trendy restaurant in the heart of historic downtown Savannah. A musical duet playing popular love songs set the mood during dinner. Later, husbands and wives formed teams and participated in a couples trivia challenge. The scene was loud and festive.
Capt. Erik Alfsen, 1st Ranger Battalion Chaplain, gave a presentation on sharing constructive criticism in marriage.
“Very often when we communicate things that bug us, we do it in a way that inflicts pain or causes damage to our relationships,” Alfsen said. “It is possible to share things that bug you without killing each other!” He went on to outline strategies for communication particularly tailored to Ranger families.
This event is one of many that the Unit Ministry Teams of the 75th Ranger Regiment run for married Rangers in order to relieve pressure on the force and Families. Strong Families and healthy home lives enable Rangers to accomplish the difficult and demanding special operations missions that they are called upon to execute.
