TORRANCE, Calif. - The City of Torrance, California, recognized Armed Forces Day with a three-day celebration including a parade through the heart of the city as well as static displays of vehicles, weapons and demonstrations of capabilities from several military branches May 15-18, 2015.
This year marked the 56th anniversary of the event and highlighted the U.S. Coast Guard, including the grand marshal of the event, Rear Adm. Joseph A. Servidio. Marines from I Marine Expeditionary Force participated to show their support for their brothers-in-arms and show gratitude to the people of Torrance for their support.
“We came out here to show our appreciation; to show the people of Torrance that we do see their support and we are grateful for it," said Boise, Idaho, native Sgt. Roberto Torres, the supply chief for 1st Transportation Support Battalion, I MEF.
Marines accounted for four out the 56 elements within the parade along with groups from other military branches, law enforcement agencies, veterans organizations, scholastic military programs, and marching bands.
The Marine Corps contributed a marching element of approximately 30 Marines, LAV-25 light armored vehicles, an M777 Howitzer, and a medium tactical vehicle to the parade.
Torres said it was a good opportunity for the Marines to represent their branch to the community and share their pride. One family said the Marine Corps has had, and will always have, a big impact on their lives.
“I’m still trying to figure out what job I want to do within the Marine Corps, but I want to join,” said Michael Ochoa, a cadet corporal in the Marine Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Carson High School in Carson, California. “The Marine Corps is the best. That’s it.”
Through the program at his school and interactions with Marines at events like the Armed Forces Day celebration, Ochoa has developed a special appreciation for the Marine Corps.
“I love how they train differently from any other branch of the military, they’re more of a brotherhood and sisterhood,” said Ochoa. “I love their integrity and everything that has to do with respect and leadership.”
After 56 years of celebrating those who serve, the City of Torrance continues to show their unwavering support of the men and women who are always ready, always willing, and always faithful.
