NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. – Men and women throughout the U.S. Air Force have enough on their plates without having to worry about finding adequate child care for their young ones.

The Child Development Center at Nellis Air Force Base strives to alleviate some of this pressure off of parent’s shoulders.

“We serve approximately 550 children a day ranging in ages six weeks to 5 years for 11.5 hours a day,” said Maynard Florence, 99th Force Support Squadron Airman and Family Services Flight chief.

The mission of the CDC is to provide affordable, available, high-quality care.

“We provide high quality programming so that while mom and dad are out supporting the mission, they can rest assured that their children are being cared for by educated professionals,” said Keana Sullivan, 99th FSS CDC I and II director. “They work to make sure that the children are developing appropriately and they are on target with their milestones.”

“The learning curriculum is based on a child’s individual needs and interests,” Sullivan went on to add.

The educational components focus on the child’s development. They learn pre-skills such as reading, writing and math.

“We teach them these pre-skills to get them ready for school so that they are ready, willing and able to do what they’re asked to do,” said Florence.

The CDC is accredited through the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

“Not many downtown facilities are accredited and most will have a set fee for everyone,” said Florence. “Here we have a sliding fee scale of nine different levels of fees.”

Creech Care is available to families from Creech Air Force Base whose spouse doesn’t work on Nellis Air Force Base.

“The Air Force through Child Care Aware subsidizes Creech families for the costs above what they would have paid at the Nellis AFB CDCs,” said Florence.

An added benefit of utilizing one of the three CDCs is they are conveniently located by where their parents work.

“We are at maximum capacity currently, between the three CDCs, family child care, and part-day pre-school,” said Florence.

Sullivan emphasized that the wait list at Nellis AFB is automated and parents wishing to place their children in child care should go to www.militarychildcare.com. Then select Nellis as the installation and follow the prompts to place a child on a waiting list.

“Nellis AFB was selected as a test base for the Department Of Defense for this website and we’ve been using it successfully for two years,” said Florence. “The rest of the bases are expected to come online sometime this year.”
