MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing commanding general, Maj. Gen. Robert F. Hedelund, was joined by Cherry Point commander, Col. Chris Pappas III, in recognizing more than 40 volunteer organizations and units for their approximately 90,000 hours of volunteer efforts to the air station during 2014.
The two commanders personally handed our certificates of appreciation during the 2015 “Celebrate Service” Volunteer Appreciation Awards Ceremony hosted by Marine Corps Community Services here April 29.
“We are hosting this ceremony to recognize and appreciate the wonderful volunteers of the air station,” said Amy Zier, the readiness and deployment support trainer with Marine Corps Family Team Building. “This is our way of extending our thanks to the hard work and dedication the volunteer has put in over the past year.”
Volunteer organizations awarded include: the American Red Cross; Veterans of Foreign Wars; Gold Star mothers; Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society; Officers and Enlisted Spouses Clubs; Single Marine Program as well as various unites and organizations associated with Cherry Point and 2nd MAW.
“One of my favorite things to do is recognize excellence in our volunteers and present awards to very worthwhile organizations,” said Pappas. “Today is about saying ‘thank you’ for all the effort that has been put forth by the volunteers and organizations through assisting our units in troop and family readiness.”
According to Pappas, during 2014, the thousands of volunteers have accrued a grand total of more than 90,000 volunteer hours.
“The volunteers make it all possible, they are where the rubber meets the road,” said Pappas. “When you think about it in terms of excellence, individuals could leave work and not look back, but our Marines, Sailors and families, keep giving. They are making our units better, our families more resilient and our community a better place.”
