Memorial Day Media Opportunity: Reserve Soldier Donates Kidney to Active Duty Soldier Injured in Iraq

FORT BRAGG, NORTH CAROLINA, UNITED STATES

    05.07.2015

Story by Lt. Col. Tad Fichtel

    U.S. Army Reserve Command

FORT BRAGG, N.C. – First Lt. Shauna Dool, a full-time graduate student at the University of North Carolina and an officer in the Army Reserve, is donating a kidney to Sgt. Maj. Miguel Filpo, an Active Duty Soldier injured in Iraq. Although she barely knew him, Dool feels she is helping a fellow Soldier and her country.

Before volunteering for the donation, Dool had only met Filpo once at a dinner with his sister. However, five months later when she heard he needed a new kidney to live, she immediately went in for testing to see if she was a match.

A husband and father of three, Filpo didn’t recognize the name when he was told the hospital identified a donor. He had no idea who she was. He called Dool to ask why she offered to help.

She told him, “I heard your story. I heard had you were injured in combat. It doesn’t matter what you think, I’m going to do this for you.”

“She is an angel,” Filpo said. “She just wants to do good for someone.”

The transplant is scheduled before the end of the month at the University of North Carolina Hospital at Chapel Hill.
