    85th Support Command

FORT HOOD, Texas – The Army Reserve’s 2nd Battalion, 381st Regiment, 479th Field Artillery Brigade, First Army Division West, based out of Dallas, won the fiscal year 2014 Department of the Army Chief of Staff, Army Supply Excellence Award in their category on April 15, 2015.

“It means a great deal. It was a lot of hard work by all of the staff,” said Lt. Col. Christopher Cook, commander, 2-281st Regiment, 479th FA Brigade. “... the work shows the (quality) of our supply program.”

Brig. Gen. Frederick R. Maiocco Jr., commanding general, 85th Support Command, and deputy commanding general, First Army Division West, presented the Army Reserve Command (USARC)-level award to the unit on May 1 at Fort Hood.

Days prior to that presentation, he learned that the unit also won the DA-level award.

“What a privilege this is to present to the soldiers and this fine unit,” Maiocco said. “It really represents stewardship and the stewardship of resources and materiel that we are entrusted with by the people of the United States to run their Army. What it really shows is the ethos in this particular command is one of trust. ... I am just so pleased with the work that they are doing, and appreciative of the great camaraderie, support and commitment to doing the right thing that’s shown all across the organization.”

The unit began preparation in October 2014 for the USARC and DA inspections after submitting their packet which included documentation highlighting samples of clothing records, hand receipts, shortage annexes, Standard Operating Procedures, Financial Liability Investigation of Property Loss (FLIPL) procedures, and samples of daily supply-related transactions to name a few components of the packet.

“When (we were informed) that the packet was complete with all required documentation, and the packet was being reviewed, we started preparing for the evaluation,” said Sgt. 1st Class Neftali Perez, Senior Supply Sergeant, 2-381st Regiment, 479th FA BDE.

The inspection began at the battalion level and then moved up to the brigade, USARC and then DA.

“It was a phenomenal experience just getting the packet together, identifying the requirement, investing the time, and preparing ourselves for the battalion and brigade level, and all the way up to the 85th (Support Command), USARC, and the DA level,” said Maj. Raschund Muhammad, Battalion S4 (Supply), 2-381st Regiment.

Perez acknowledged numerous staff members from his unit and through his chain of command for the achievements he and his unit were able to accomplish.

“This means a lot of hard work and teamwork,” he said. “This meant what outcome we can get from working as a team and working hard. We made a commitment ... We worked all the way through to get everything right and at the end we can enjoy the outcome.”

The 2-381st Regiment, 479th FA Brigade, won the FY 14 DA Chief of Staff Army Supply Excellence Award under their category: Level III (B) Brigade/Battalion TDA (Table of Distribution Allowances).

“It was the first time that I participated ...” said Perez. “I can say that I am leaving my supply section in a perfect condition, and in a lot better (condition) than I found it; and that’s what the goal is.”

During the competition at the USARC-level, 2-381st Regiment competed against eight additional Army Reserve units in the final rounds before winning the USARC selection to the DA level. The 2-381st Regiment was one of only two reserve units chosen to compete at the DA level in their category according to Lt. Col. Bruce Ladman, deputy, G4, 85th Support Command.

The DA level award will be presented, on June 10, at the Pentagon during the Annual Combined Logistics Excellence Award (CLEA) ceremony.

The Chief of Staff, Army, Supply Excellence Award (SEA) Program was conceived during the Total Army Worldwide Supply Conference held in November 1984.
