SAN DIEGO - Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 3 hosted a Women’s Cultural Workshop at the Naval Air Station North Island Theater May 1. The workshop was geared toward young women relatively new to naval service and focused on woman’s equality, confidence, and changing current cultural norms. The goal of the workshop was to give women a day to discuss issues pertaining to them in a safe environment.

“We’re hoping the confidence, empowerment, and connections these young women make at this workshop will follow them to their work centers and give them the tools to deal with some of the issues that we all face,” said Lt Cmdr. Kathy Youngberg, from HSC-3.

The workshop offered lectures about specific cultural norms that can be changed among young women to help them achieve positive growth and self-perception in work spaces and ratings that may have men as the majority gender. During the workshop the audience was asked to break into small groups led by Fleet & Family Support specialists.

“We had them practice challenging situations to gain the confidence to confront situations with assertiveness and professionalism,” said Janet Paulovich, director of Fleet & Family Support Center Naval Base San Diego.

According to Paulovich, the exchange of wisdom between experienced and less seasoned Sailors that happens during these informal discussions about challenging situations is important because it builds the confidence required to change cultural norms.

“Encouraging women to lean-in and taking away self-doubt is important for women in the military,” said Personnel Specialist 1st Class Amber DeVries, a reservist with HSC-3. “In order to train junior Sailors to be wise leaders we need to get them to believe in themselves.”

According to DeVries, the workshop’s broad focus was to show young female Sailors that with hard work and dedication anything is possible in the Navy.

“It’s important for their development as Sailors and women,” added DeVries. “Not just for themselves but those around them. This is the foundation of wise leadership.”

The workshop also offered a panel of female enlisted leaders to give testimony of their success and advice in an open forum discussion with the audience.

“I liked it! I never bumped into any master chief females. It really inspired me,” said Gas Turbine Systems Technician – Mechanical 3rd Class Lupita Rodriguez from HSC-3. “They’ve had children and were able to do it and that, to me, is very inspiring.”

According to DeVries, women face unique challenges that men will never have, like choosing to have children or not. She also says women are equally equipped to handle those challenges.

“This event is designed to help young women perceive that confidence and empowerment in themselves,” DeVries added. “I’d like to see more workshops like these at the regional level.”
