BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan – Wrangler Soldiers from the 4th Resolute Support Sustainment Brigade competed in the Amazing SHARP Race on Bagram Air Field, Afghanistan, April 15, 2015, where Soldiers had to run to various locations along Route Disney and solve various SHARP related problems.

Instead of conducting the required quarterly Sexual Harassment Assault Response Prevention training in an auditorium setting, Soldiers were able to demonstrate their understanding of SHARP, Equal Opportunity and Inspector General knowledge during the innovative training scenarios.

Sgt. 1st Class Hipolito Zaragoza Jr. a native of Streator, Illinois, and the 4th Special Troops Battalion noncommissioned officer in charge of SHARP and the Sexual Assault Response coordinator, played a pivotal role in making the race happen.

“We wanted to try and do something different. We had a lot of people say that the monotony of sitting in a classroom or theater just popping up slides was getting a little old,” said Zaragoza.

He wanted Soldiers to receive a different type of training by testing them on their knowledge of SHARP while at the same time getting away from the typical PowerPoint classes, and providing Wrangler Soldiers an opportunity to teach what they have learned.

“We had a lot of people say that they have been to so many SHARP classes that they could teach it so this was their chance to do something different and also try and teach it,” he added.

As Wranglers prepared to start the competition they were given a map with the various stations highlighted so they could strategize with their teammates before they began. One of the locations Soldiers had to reach was the newly opened SHARP Resource Center located at Motel 8, on BAF.

The competition was a unique way for Soldiers to learn where outside resources for SHARP, EO, and IG facilities were located in case they wanted to report or escort a Soldier for assistance outside of their brigade.

Spc. Brian K. Tripp, a Jefferson, Missouri, native with the 4th STB, was one of the team members for the S6 team who prior to the Amazing SHARP Race never knew where the recently opened Resource Facility was located.

“Whenever you hear about those places in SHARP training you never really get a chance to go there, but with this training I know exactly where it was since I just ran three miles to get there,” said Tripp. “If someone had just told me where it was I never would have been able to find it.”

The Soldiers began and finished the race at the Resolute Support Facility Compound where their final times were tallied, the winners announced, and their unique training experience concluded.
