2006 St. Xavier High School graduate reenlists at the Arnold Sports Festival

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Navy Recruiting District (NRD) Ohio recruiter Aviation Electronics Technician 2nd Class Joseph Sunderman reenlisted for six years in the U. S. Navy at the Arnold Sports Festival.

Sunderman is a 2006 graduate from St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, Ohio and a Naval Special Warfare (NSW) Scout for NRD Ohio, working out of Navy Recruiting Station Eastgate.

Sunderman said, “I originally joined the Navy planning to serve my initial five year contract and then go to college utilizing the GI Bill. I reenlisted for three years [referring to his previous reenlistment], not knowing where life would take me once I came back home to Ohio. I now know that I want to stay in for at least 20 years and make the most of my career.”

Sunderman stated that he chose to reenlist at the Arnold Sports Festival so that his fellow NSW Scouts could be in attendance. The location provided a change of venue from the offices and reserve centers where NRD Ohio personnel usually reenlist. Also in attendance were his fiancée Sarah DeVore and her parents. The Arnold Sports Festival is the nation’s largest multi-sport festival, featuring 18,000 athletes and 50 sports and events. The Festival was founded in 1989 by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Columbus businessman Jim Lorimer. The festival is now held annually at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.

Sunderman’s reenlisting officer was NRD Ohio Officer Recruiter, Lt. Jason Henderson, who works out of the local Navy Officer Recruiting Station in Cincinnati.

Henderson said, “Reenlisting Sunderman at ‘The Arnold’ was a very unique venue and different from any other enlistment I have conducted. I was honored to reenlist him.”

According to Henderson, many people stopped to take pictures and video of the reenlistment with their cell phones when they realized what was happening.

Henderson said, “I’m always honored when asked to reenlist a Sailor and I make it a priority in my schedule. It’s a special event and I enjoy being a part of it.”
