ZAMBAR DISTRICT, Afghanistan – Insurgent groups are increasingly facing a more capable and resolute opponent here as Afghan national security forces work together with coalition forces to combat the use of improvised explosive devices. By taking a more active role in the fight against IEDs, ANSF are helping to secure, exploit and render safe roadside bombs and explosives that have become a staple of the insurgents' arsenal.
The advantage of the coalition and Afghan partnership became evident as Afghan national army soldiers of the 203rd Corps in Khowst District conducted a mounted patrol here along with U.S. combat engineers of Company C, 70th Engineer Battalion, Feb. 5.
During the mission, the combined Afghan and U.S. force discovered two IEDs within an hour's time. While the Afghan soldiers provided security, demolition experts successfully cleared the IEDs making the roadway safe for commerce and travel.
Despite reports of increased violence in Afghanistan, the number of IED events in January of 2008 was almost thirty percent less than IED events in January of 2007.
"The remarkable security provided by the 203rd ANA is a combat multiplier in clearing routes. The Afghan Soldiers talking with the local Afghan citizens calmed the situation. The ANA are essential to decreasing insurgent activity," said Capt. David Meier, Commander for Co. C, 70th Eng. Btn.
