EL COCO, El Salvador - Citizens from nearby neighborhoods are being shuttled to the Medical Readiness Training Exercise in El Coco to receive medical care as part of this year's Beyond the Horizon exercise on April 17.

The shuttle to and from the MEDRETE is essential to treat patients who cannot make the trip on their own.

“The buses are key for people to go. Especially for the elderly. They already have problems getting around and they don't have cars,” said Sgt. 1st Class Jose G. Meruelo, from Orcutt, California, with the 152nd Theater Information Group out of Dublin, California.

Beyond the Horizon is a humanitarian exercise to providing medical and civil assistance to the people of El Salvador through June.

On the second day of the MEDRETE, to facilitate more patients, they decided it would be a good idea to go to the farther-out communities to bring people in, said U.S. Army Sgt. David Arrieta from Houston, with the 451st Civil Affairs Battalion out of Houston.

To accomplish this, members of 451st Civil Affairs and 399th Tactical Psychological Operations Company out of San Marcos, Texas, collaborated to inform and gather local citizens in need of medical care, but who live too far away to walk to the MEDRETE.

U.S. Army Cpl. Ricardo Martinez, from Santa Ana, El Salvador, also with the 399th, translated the message over a loud speaker to the local populace informing them of the MEDRETE and shuttle option. Arrieta followed in the shuttle bus and answered people's questions about the MEDRETE and shuttle.

“Sure enough, it was an instant hit. Within 10 minutes, they had a full bus. It was a success, so we saw that there was a transportation need,” said Meruelo.

Not only is there a need for medical care in the rural areas of El Salvador, a need exists in helping them reach that care. For many citizens here, this transportation to the MEDRETE is the only way they are able to receive the medical care they truly need.
