MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Marines and sailors with 2nd Marine Logistics Group performed a thorough litter pickup in the French Creek area of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, April 22, 2015. Service members conducted this area-wide cleanup in support of Earth Day.

“We take ownership of our French Creek area,” said Master Sgt. Tyson Spencer, the logistics chief for Combat Logistics Regiment 25. “We all benefit from having a clean area.”

CLR-25 organized this event, bringing Marines and sailors from several different commands together to participate in the environment-friendly day.

Gaylord Nelson, a former U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, established Earth Day in 1970 following the 1969 oil spills off the coast of Santa Barbara, California. Earth Day is a day people make environmental issues the topic of discussion and do their part to clean up the earth. The United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species act were all formed as a result of Earth Day.

“This isn’t something we do just once,” said Spencer, the Kalispell, Montana, native. “We perform a [trash pickup] once a month of the entire French Creek area. This month, we just incorporated it into Earth Day.”

The Marines not only picked up trash alongside roads, but also ventured into the woods in order to complete an in-depth cleanup of the area.

Fifty-seven Marines and sailors walked for several hours cleaning up an area that is roughly 6,000 square meter area.

“We took the time and did a thorough cleanup,” Spencer said. “We separated the trash into recyclables and non-recyclables.”

At the conclusion of the day, the Marines gathered hundreds of pounds of trash including broken televisions, countless plastic bottles, old tires and even old power lines that were buried in the woods.

“The Marines did an exceptional job during the cleanup,” Spencer said. “They were extremely thorough, ensuring [almost] no trash remained in the French Creek area.”
