JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, N.J. – At 107 years old, the Army Reserve looks pretty good for its age.

In fact, it looks as good today as is has at any point in its century-long history, from its beginnings as the Medical Reserve Corps in 1908 to its service in both peace and wartime during the past 100 years to its role today as the Army’s all-volunteer federal force.

“The Army Reserve is an operational force for the Army, the Joint Force and the nation, providing trained, equipped and ready Soldiers, leaders and units wherever and whenever needed,” said Army Reserve Ambassador Steven J. Hashem during an Army Reserve birthday celebration hosted here April 23 by U.S. Army Support Activity-Dix and the 99th Regional Support Command.

“Consistently engaged since Sept. 11, 2001, more than 300,000 Army Reserve Soldiers have mobilized and deployed in support of the Total Army and Joint Force,” he continued. “Currently, we have Army Reserve Soldiers deployed in 32 countries around the world.”

The Army Reserve consists of approximately 200,000 highly skilled Soldiers in 148 career fields providing life-saving and life-sustaining capabilities across the globe.

“The Army Reserve is also a very fiscally efficient force; it provides nearly 20 percent of the Army’s total force for less than 6 percent of the total Army budget,” explained Hashem, who retired as an Army major general after a 37-year military career.

Army Reserve Soldiers are highly-educated professionals in their civilian careers. They are the nation’s doctors, lawyers, teachers, scientists, engineers and information technology specialists on the leading edge of high-tech industry.

“How important the Army Reserve is across the different components of our military,” said Air Force Maj. Gen. Rick Martin, commander of the U.S. Air Force Expeditionary Center here, noting that three key factors that make the Army Reserve indispensable are its connection to the community, its Soldiers’ experience level and their continuity throughout years of steady service.

“The civilian skills and community connections that Reserve Soldiers bring are critical to the success of our military,” added Hashem.

As the Army Reserve continues into the 21st century, it will continue to plan and prepare to provide consistent, reliable and unique capabilities as required by the Army and the nation.

“The Army Reserve has been, is now and will continue to be an integral part of the Total Force,” Hashem said.
