PHOENIX – Over 200 participants attended the first annual Ask Me About Respect 5K Walk and Run at the Papago Park Military Reservation here April 18.
In conjunction with the 11th annual Department of Defense Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM), the Arizona Army National Guard’s Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention (SHARP) Office coordinated the event to bring together community organizations to honor survivors and provide education and resources to the public.
“The Arizona National Guard is committed to creating a climate that does not tolerate acts of violence against anyone in our community,” said Master Sgt. Angelita Manygoats, Arizona National Guard Sexual Assault Response Coordinator (SARC). “By combining our efforts with our community partners we build a unified front to stop sexual assaults in Arizona and prosecute violators to the fullest extent of the law.”
Participants in this year’s event included representatives from Phoenix VA Health Care System, Arizona Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence, City of Phoenix Family Advocacy Center, ASU Wellness, and Man-Up ASU & WOW Factor! ASU.
“These incidents are not exclusive to the military,” said Stephanie Dove, Military Sexual Trauma Coordinator for the Phoenix VA Healthcare System. “Coming together with other organizations helps us better serve survivors with the most current resources and provides us an opportunity to build bridges throughout the community.”
Brent Waldrep, a resident of Phoenix, heard about the event through friends and knew right away he wanted to be a part of it.
“Being a part of this event and honoring the survivors of sexual assault was very important to me,” said Waldrep. “This being the first event, I wanted to be a part of something bigger than myself and help support such a worthy cause.”
After the run participants visited with representatives of local organizations during the event expo and attended seminars with guest speakers from around the state.
This is the 11th annual Department of Defense Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM) with the theme "Eliminate Sexual Assault: Know your part. Do your part."
