Story by Staff Sgt. Richard Wrigley

    3rd Infantry Division

FORT STEWART, Ga. - Brig. Gen. James Blackburn and Command Sgt. Maj. Stanley Varner, commander and senior enlisted leader, respectively, of Task Force Marne, 3rd Infantry Division, signed a proclamation in division headquarters declaring the month of April the Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, April 15. This is the Army’s fourth annual SAAPM. This years theme is “Eliminate sexual assault: Know your part. Do your part.”

SAAPM is recognized in April by both civilian and military communities. The Department of Defense observes SAAPM by focusing on creating the appropriate culture to eliminate sexual assault and requiring a personal commitment from all Service members at every level. We all have a part in combating sexual assault and SAAPM offers an excellent opportunity to focus attention on our individual roles.

One way the 3rd ID decided to get Soldiers to embrace this year’s SAAPM theme is to offer a week long Sexual Harassment and Response Prevention Self Defense Course.

Master Sgt. Joseph Leggett, the senior transmissions plans chief, 3rd ID, also served as the primary instructor through out the week of, April 13. The course was made available to any and all who wanted to attend, and focused on teaching critical moves to stop unwanted advances, break contact from aggressors, and get out of dangerous situations.

“There are a lot of Soldiers out there who love [the program] because the stuff I taught was simple, and its a lot of stuff that people just don’t know."
