EL COCO, El Salvador – Two veterinarians with the 994th Medical Detachment Veterinary Service from Round Rock, Texas, are cross-training two unit members during the Veterinary Readiness Training Exercise April 12 through 23 as part of this year's Beyond the Horizon exercise.

BTH is a humanitarian and civic assistance mission to build schools, clinics and provide medical assistance to the people of El Salvador and their animals through June.

U.S. Army Capt. Yvette Brenden from Albuquerque, Texas, and Capt. Michael Brown from Cleveland, Texas, both veterinarians with the 994th MDVS, are training their soldiers to prepare and administer treatment to livestock and dogs in order to address the great need for veterinarian services here and to increase their skill set.

The VETRETE travels to homes of local citizens in order to vaccinate and provide medical care for 100 or more animals a day, allowing for plenty of hands-on learning experience.

“This is part of their cross-training. We utilize everyone in our unit,” said Brenden.

Both Staff Sgt. Eliazar Osio, and Spc. Michael Ingram, the unit's food inspector and generator mechanic, both from Austin, Texas, gave vaccines and vitamins to cattle, dogs and goats here.

It was fun, educational and always good training, said Ingram.

Throughout the workday Breden and Brown share their experience and safety precautions for working with uncooperative animals. After Brown's instructions to keep a safe distance from the cattle's hoofs, Ingram dodged at least three potential kicks while successfully applying the dewormer.

“Whenever you teach somebody a new skill it helps them like their work, move forward and have additional goals to strive for,” said Brown.

The VETRETE mission provides a wealth experience for veterinarians to cross-train soldiers while enhancing the health of household pets and the animals they rely on for food.

“With this training they are more experienced and confident being around animals so that we are not trying to train them when we need them to do the job,” said Brown.
