TACOMA, Wash. – Lt. Gen. Stephen R. Lanza, commanding general, I Corps, spent the morning discussing global leadership and I Corps’ mission in the Asia-Pacific region with several dozen students from the Institute for Global Engagement, University of Washington-Tacoma April 16.

The roundtable discussion, part of an ongoing partnership between I Corps and UW-Tacoma, touched on numerous topics vital to operating in a global environment including leadership, collaboration, communication and cultural competence.

“The Institute for Global Engagement is all about collaboration,” said Divya McMillin, director of the Institute of Global Engagement, UW-Tacoma. “It is about understanding the world, so this and some of the subjects Lanza covered, we are discussing in class now.”

Many students felt that this event gave them the opportunity to listen and learn from someone well-versed and experienced on several key global topics.

“(This event brings) to life all the things that we’re studying in class,” said Chris Theine, a student at UW-Tacoma. “All the theories that we’re learning, all the books that we’re reading, all the questions that we were asking about how to engage globally ... he’s [Lanza] living those questions right now.”

Lanza answered a variety of questions during the brief with the intent of broadening and enriching the students understanding of the world from a military perspective.

According to Theine, understanding how the military interacts on a global level is sometimes hard to comprehend.

“To hear his perspective on how he lives through those questions on a day-to-day basis is incredibly useful,” he added. “I thought it was great to bring the military’s perspective to an academic context. For me, the two have been separate and sometimes at odds, so to find a way to bridge those two worlds so that we can have more communication is great.”

After the event, students and faculty members discussed the benefits of the event. McMillin said that the discussion yielded tremendous results.

“He was able to address the students in a very relevant and direct way, and I think (given) the number of questions that were asked the students really felt at ease,” she said. “In terms of a learning environment for the classroom, I think we saw the best dynamics at play.”
