    Story by Sgt. Brian Johnson

    216th Engineer Battalion

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - RIG is a leader in the field of first response, having served as the first responders to such notable tragedies as the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Hurricane Katrina, and the (Alfred P.) Murrah building explosion in Oklahoma City in 1995.

The CERFP team provides response capabilities to search damaged buildings, evacuate areas and structures that may be in a danger zone, rescue trapped casualties, decontaminate personnel and perform medical triage. The CERFP is the first level of relief for civilian first responders. The Chillicothe based 1194th Engineer Company is the search and extraction element of the CERFP.

The HAMAT Training consisted of many different topics, including basic hazardous terms, knowledge of basic hazard and risk techniques, selecting and using proper personal protective equipment, implementing basic decontamination procedures and understanding relevant standard operating procedures and termination procedures.

“We are training people for something that we hope they never have to use,” said Mike Hollman, an instructor from RIG. Mollman is also a 21-year veteran of the Oklahoma City Fire department and HAZMAT teams. “The training that we did today will help the Soldiers if they encounter a HAZMAT situation in real life. The Soldiers will have the resources and the basic knowledge about how to deal with the situation and to keep themselves, the general public, property and the environment safe.”

“The training that we had over the last two days will help give me a much better idea of how to keep the Soldiers safe,” said new search and extraction member Sgt. Cheryl Netter, of Frankfort. Netter is the Safety non-commissioned officer for the search and extraction team. “For me, being new to the team, this was an extremely informative class. I now know more about the proper safety measures in the event of a chemical spill, and how to make sure that no one gets injured.”

Staff Sgt. Reggie netter, also of Frankfort, thought the class was a great training experience.

“I now have more knowledge of what I can and can’t do in a HAZMAT situation,” said Netter, who is also a Chillicothe police officer in his civilian job. “As an officer, I am required to have knowledge of how to react in a HAZMAT situation. By going through a training like this, it only makes me that much more effective in my civilian job.”
