    II Marine Expeditionary Force

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Maintaining communications with other units and a unit’s ability to move swiftly between locations during an operation are critical to the success of the overall mission.

Marines with Headquarters Company, 2nd Marine Division, along with other units aboard Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, participated in simulated exercises in support of the 82nd Airborne's bilateral Combined Joint Operational Access Exercise 15-01 April 14, 2015.

“The purpose of this exercise [for us] is to establish communications in order to improve the Division’s command and control, as well as develop a more efficient cargo load,” said 1st Lt. Christian Toro, the training and logistics officer with the unit and a native of Beacon, New York.

Communications is vital to successful military missions, especially in a joint operations setting. It allows ground units to effectively communicate with moving parts to determine adjustments needed to complete the mission.

The exercise also provided the command the opportunity to assess equipment and cargo needs as well as observe team efficiency. Toro said developing a lighter cargo load helps the unit maintain mobility, as well as ensure they do not weight down ships when they embark. Mobility is important in today’s battlefield because it give units the ability to expand their reach.

“These exercises give our Marines experience getting all the gear up the way it’s supposed be and ensure that communications is provided to the main unit,” Toro said.

Marines will spend the remaining days of the exercise focused on base improvements. Ongoing enhancements and duties include camouflaging assets, maintaining security and assisting the radio teams with achieving full communications accessibility, to include telephone and computer availability throughout the base.
