BISMARCK, N.D. — Two North Dakota Army National Guard UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters continue to provide support this evening to emergency responders battling a wildfire south of Bismarck, near the residential area of Briardale. A third helicopter also has been requested and will launch before 7 p.m.

After ending fire suppression missions in the early afternoon today with one of its Black Hawk helicopters, the North Dakota National Guard again was requested for assistance from the North Dakota Department of Emergency Services. North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple extended an executive order, which authorizes the adjutant general to activate North Dakota National Guard resources in support of local and tribal governments fighting wildfires.

The first Black Hawk launched at 5:45 p.m. (CST) from the Guard’s Army Aviation Support Facility, south of the Bismarck airport, with a second launching at 5:51 p.m.

The North Dakota Department of Transportation has asked the public to limit traffic on ND Highway 1804, south of Bismarck, to local traffic only from Airway Ave. to 102nd Ave. SE, which is three miles south of the University of Mary. Emergency personnel are responding to the fire and would appreciate the public’s cooperation.

The Black Hawks are assigned to the Bismarck-based Company C, 2nd Battalion, 285th Aviation Regiment and are using 600 gallon water buckets to help control the wildfire. The helicopters are scooping water out of the Missouri River and will assist as fuel and flying conditions allow or until the mission is complete.
