MIHAIL KOGĂLNICEANU, Romania – More than 1,500 local schoolchildren from Constanta, Romania, experienced a hands-on education about the military at a combined-forces static display aboard Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base, April 6-9.

“For the children, as well as for the teachers, this was an unforgettable experience that we hope to repeat on other occasions,” said Georgiana Ciara, a teacher at Stelutele Marii Kindergarten in Constanta. “We are thankful to the military forces of United States of America for offering the children the opportunity to visit the military base in Mihail Kogalniceanu.”

U.S. Marines with Black Sea Rotational Force, service members of the Romanian Air Force, and U.S. Army soldiers with Black Sea Area Support Team volunteered their time showing children equipment ranging from military vehicles and communications equipment to explosive ordnance disposal robots, weapons and aircraft.

“Seeing schoolchildren of all ages genuinely interested and happy to be here really illustrates the impact engagements like this have within the local community,” explained Capt. Joseph Pizzillo, Headquarters and Service company executive officer with Black Sea Rotational Force.
‘School Day on MK’ began in 2014 and attendance multiplied exponentially this year.

“Events like this are a great way for us to give back to the local community,” Pizzillo said. “We are very thankful to the Romanians for allowing us to be here today and allowing BSRF to be postured aboard Mihail Kogălniceanu.”

Black Sea Rotational Force conducts security cooperation activities with NATO Allies and partners in the Black Sea, Balkan and Caucasus regions. Their year-round presence in the region allows for continued and deep-seated partnerships between the United States and Eastern European militaries, and communities that host them, while deterring threats, promoting a unified Europe, and building the capability to collectively address security challenges.
