ATLANTA - To celebrate the roles occupational therapists play in contributing to patients’ well-being, April has been designated as National Occupational Therapy Month. The rehabilitation staff at the Atlanta VA Medical Center is honoring this occasion by educating veterans, family members and employees about the benefits of this discipline.
“We offer comprehensive healthcare to address one of the most important aspects of rehabilitation and recovery — the return to a normal life," said Rosemary McGinty, the medical center’s chief of Occupational Therapy. To celebrate the roles occupational therapists play in contributing to patients’ well-being, April has been designated as National Occupational Therapy Month. The rehabilitation staff at the Atlanta VA Medical Center is honoring this occasion by educating veterans, family members and employees about the benefits of this discipline.
McGinty added that she and her staff strive to help Veterans who have suffered an illness or injury develop skills for daily living such as performing a certain task, driving, shopping, or even preparing a meal.
“We give them back only a small token of what they have given us,” she said.
Occupational therapy, according to McGinty, has its roots in helping war veterans recover from injuries sustained in combat. By focusing on the physical, psychological and social needs of patients, Atlanta VA’s occupational therapists help Veterans function at their highest possible level.
“Our services are available on both an inpatient and outpatient basis at the medical center and in some situations, at a veteran’s home.” said McGinty.
