COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Sitting in front of a computer a 7th grade student has the attention of two U.S. Army Soldiers as she explains the historical significance of Christopher Columbus. The Soldiers from 299th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, are acting as judges for the History Day Expo, March 18, 2015 at North Middle School.

The 299th BEB has recently formed a partnership with North Middle School as part of the unit’s Adopt-a-School program. This expo was the flagship event for the partnership between the two and according to all those involved it was an overwhelming success.

The students were given the choice to create a web based presentation or your typical trip-fold cardboard presentation. The theme of the project was to choose someone who had left an indelible impact on society. The students chose their historical idol and then justified their choice with background information and analysis about the positive impact that person left on the world.

“At first I was a little hesitant to participate in the event. As the day went on I realized how amazing some of the projects were, the kids put a lot of work into it and I would be lying if I didn't say I learned a few things that day,” said Sgt. 1st Class Shawn Scott, platoon sergeant, Company Echo, 299th BEB, 1st SBCT, 4th Inf. Div. "It was really interesting to see how well some of the projects were put together, and hearing how passionate some of the students were was amazing."

The teachers and administrators from the school also had nothing but positive things to say about the event. Mr. Robert Moore, 6th grade Social Studies teacher, said he was glad Fort Carson soldiers get so involved in the community.

“The Soldiers came in and made the History Day Expo better and really challenged the students,” he said. “I would love to have the Soldiers come in next time to help the kids complete their projects and really get involved with the process.”

By the end of the day every student had their project judged at least two times, over 1200 judging sheets were created, some of the best will go on to the Regional History Day later this month at Colorado College.

“I was extremely proud of the North students today,” Moore said, “The Soldiers judged over 347 presentations during this event.”

Darian Founds, North Middle School’s International Bachelorette Coordinator, said the event was a positive one for all the adults and kids involved.

“A lot of positive energy was flowing through the building today,” said Darian, “I can’t wait for the next event when we can get Soldiers and students involved again.”
