Hundreds of eyes focused on a formation, a sea of red and blue dress uniforms, in anticipation of the performance of a lifetime.

The United States Marine Corps Battle Color Detachment performed during their Battle Color Ceremony at Liversedge Field aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, March 24.

The ceremony featured “The Commandant’s Own,” The United States Marine Corps Drum & Bugle Corps, The United States Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon and The Official Color Guard of the Marine Corps.

The unit of 130 Marines travels worldwide to demonstrate several traits of United States Marines, to include discipline and professionalism.

“The performance was outstanding,” said Sgt. Maj. Paul Berry, Marine Corps Installations East-Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune sergeant major. “It showcases what the Marine Corps is all about. No where do you see any armed forces with this kind of talent. We bring out the Silent Drill Platoon and battle colors to showcase the discipline and heritage that every Marine is a rifleman.”

The streamers and silver bands displayed on the battle colors presented during the ceremony symbolize the 54 military campaigns and more than 400 battles the Marine Corps has participated in.

“The Commandant’s Own” performed songs and traditional marching music with precise drill movements during their program titled, “Music in Motion.”

“I’ve seen the battle colors ceremony numerous times, and it gets better and better every year,” said Col. Yori Escalante, MCIEASTMCB CAMLEJ deputy commander. “This shows the discipline and skill it takes to be a Marine, regardless of what you do.”

MCIEAST-MCB CAMLEJ and Onslow County leaders were in attendance along with Marines, sailors and their families.

“We came out the represent the Marine Corps,” said Lance Cpl. Jonathan Hernandez, a Marine with The United States Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon and native of Austin, Texas. “We wanted to let them know there are people out there representing those who can’t represent themselves.”

After the ceremony, the Marines of the detachment stayed on the field to interact with audience members.

Knowing we make our audience proud is very rewarding,” said Hernandez. “All of us love what we do.”

As the performance came to an end, those eyes in the audience showed excitement and awe for the performance no one would soon forget.

“I call it getting a shot of green,” said Berry. “If you came here today and you’re not motivated or fired up about being a Marine and serving your country then you’re in the wrong business.”
