CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Machine gunners lined up surrounding their non-commissioned officers as they conduct a brief on the plan for the daily regimen. Following conclusion of the brief, the Marines formed up with their M240 Bravo medium-machine guns in order to start live-fire exercise.

Non-commissioned officers with Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, evaluated junior Marines operating in squads, primarily at the squads leaders’ initiative by managing their teams and communication skills aboard Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, April 2, 2015.

“Today we’re doing a 240 Bravo squad level shoot,” said 1st Lt. Andrew Harrington, a Weapons Platoon Commander with Bravo Company, and native of Novi, Michigan. “We’re evaluating the squad leaders’ operating skills within individual squadrons.”

The objective of this training was to start from the basics and work up to leading the fire team from the gun line to setting up the machine gun, said Harrington.

“Being at the range is great,” said Pfc. Christopher Holmes, a machine gunner with Bravo Company, and native of Santa Rosa, California. “Being able to pick our weapons up and putting rounds downrange is my favorite thing to do.”

During each workup the objective is manipulating the team, and setting the tripod up. The squad level is the highest level a company will work up to with machine guns, according to Harrington.

“We’re working squad level today,” said Harrington. “We’re working on the squad level proficiency to allow the Marines the opportunity for better training and preparation.”

While on the gun range, safety is imperative to mission completion to ensure the training is as effective as possible.

“The big thing I want to take away from this training is working as a team,” said Holmes. “Completing our drills and exercises will make sure we’re ready to go when needed.”

“As machine gunners they’re supporting those infantrymen on the deck,” said Harrington. “You need to be very proficient and confident in what you do.”

“Communication skills allow them to support the infantrymen as we go downrange, so when we head towards that workup we’re better prepared.”
