MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society is accepting handmade baby blankets for donation to military families expecting children at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C.

The mission of the NMCRS is to provide financial assistance, education, and programs to service members and their families. The goal is to help each client with support for their immediate needs.

Volunteers donate the blankets along with other newborn necessities for families in need. Blankets are accepted from other service members or civilians who want to assist new or expecting parents.

“We offer new parents a class on how to budget their finances to prepare for a newborn baby,” said Vicki Wilson, the NMCRS director here. “Upon completion of the course, they are given a diaper bag with basic necessities, including a baby blanket that has been donated to the NMCRS.”

The blankets must measure at least 36 by 36 inches, but can be made out of any color yarn the donor chooses, explained Wilson. The NMCRS offers free yarn to those who are interested in making a blanket.

“Several volunteers are from the surrounding community,” said Wilson. “The volunteers enjoy giving new parents something they have put time and effort into making.”

Donors receive 30 hours of volunteer service for providing a blanket, according to Izzy Carnes, a NMCRS volunteer representative.

“Donating blankets gives many people a sense of fulfillment,” said Carnes. “Many people put in dozens of hours to complete these blankets that are being given to newborns and their families free of charge.”

According to Carnes, service members and their families should not have to worry about their finances when expecting a child. Providing new and expecting parents with both a class and free supplies alleviates some of the stress they might be experiencing.

“Seeing the reaction of the new parents when they receive the blankets is my own personal reward,” said Carnes. “They are grateful for all the work we put into these finished products for them. We are here to take care of our service members and their families as they have taken care of us.”
