    Story by Sgt. Brian Johnson

    216th Engineer Battalion

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - Spc. Clinton Sheets of Chillicothe was chosen as the 16th Engineer Brigade Enlisted Soldier of the Year for 2005. The 16th Engineer Brigade consists of over 2,000 soldiers from four different engineer battalions, based all over the state of Ohio.

Spc. Sheets is a member of Alpha Company, 216th Engineer Battalion, based out of Chillicothe. The unit consists of carpenters, electricians, plumbers and heavy equipment operators.

The process for being selected Soldier of the Year is a very long and hard process. Soldiers go before a panel of 3-5 senior ranking noncommissioned officers from around the state. They are grilled on a series of different questions from different categories including military history, current events, drill and ceremonies, and common task training. By the time a soldier has made it to the brigade soldier of the year board, they will have gone through three previous boards.

Unit 1st Sgt. Christopher Wisener, of Portsmouth, said about the Soldier of the Year process, “It is very demanding! Chosen by his peers because of his superior abilities is only part of the process. Sitting in front of a panel of senior NCOs with vast amounts of knowledge in just about every aspect of the military isn't something you can just fake your way through. The preparations and stress are enough to make a normal man quit. At this time of year with Christmas at hand, it just says alot about the caliber of soldier Spc. Sheets is. Knowing what he is going through with these boards, he is definitely the best of the best."

Spc. Sheets said about the process and being selected, “I was really surprised to be selected. I felt there were other soldiers who had a better shot at it than I did. To be selected as soldier of the year was an honor. I didn't know what to expect with the first board. For me this was a brand new experience. I was relieved when I had finished the first board. When I got the phone call saying that I was selected for the next board, I felt a little more confident, but still stressed and scared. I get a little more stressed and scared as I keep going to each board, but I am confident that I will do well.”

The next step for Spc. Sheets is the state Soldier of the Year in January.
