SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. - Scott Air Force Base's Youth Center nominated Brianna Bowman to represent the base in competing for the Illinois Military Youth of the Year award through the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Brianna, a Mascoutah High School junior, will travel to Schaumburg, Illinois, in April to compete for the award.

"I'm looking forward to competing," Brianna said. "The skills I am learning now are preparing me for the future, when interviews and public speaking will be expected."

For the state-level competition, Brianna must prepare a speech and present it to a group. She also had to collect three letters of recommendation and write four essays. The topics of the essays were her experiences, her vision for the nation's youth, good health and fitness, and leadership and service.

"The process of preparing for competition has been exhausting, but I wanted to finish it because I want to inspire the youth of the nation," Brianna said. "I want them to be good citizens and role models. I want them to lead."

To qualify for the award, Brianna had to display leadership skills, volunteer in the community, and follow her own advice to be an overall outstanding citizen.

Brianna participates in the Keystone Club at the Youth Center, which is a partnership with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. She is also a member of the Junior ROTC, the model United Nations, Future Business Leaders of America, the Air Force Student Council, Kittyhawk Air Society, cheerleading and model rocketry. She is a recent inductee into the National Honors Society.

Despite being involved in many extra-curricular activities, Brianna finds time to mentor other students, help out at an assisted living home, and volunteer through "adopt-a-highway."

"I enjoy volunteering," Brianna said. "I like helping the community. I like being productive and getting things done. I like being a leader."

Through the Youth Center, Brianna has found an advisor in Debbie Stewart, Youth Center Teen Coordinator.

Stewart said she is there to guide the teens in their decisions and accomplishing their tasks.

"As their advisor, I like to follow their direction," said Stewart. "If they are making bad or dangerous decisions, I will try to guide them back, but other than that, I follow their lead. All of these kids are amazing leaders."

When talking of Brianna, specifically, Stewart said she is impressed by all she has accomplished as a youth.

"Brianna didn't feel like she should apply [for the award], because she has been at Scott for such a short time," Stewart said. "I told her that she met the requirements for the award, no matter where she accomplished them, and that she deserved the recognition for all she has done."

If Brianna earns the nomination for the state of Illinois in April, she will advance to the regional competition for Military Youth of the Year. If she wins the regional level, she will advance to the national level of competition.
