CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Sailors and Marines with the 2nd Marine Logistics Group celebrated the 122nd birthday of the rank chief petty officer aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, April 1, 2015.
The rank of chief petty officer was established on April 1, 1893, with only nine sailors being presented with the rank at that time. The Navy now contains more than 30,000 chiefs, senior chiefs and master chief petty officers.
The selection process for Chief Petty Officer is much more thorough than the ranks that precede it and consists of specialty examinations, time in service and peer evaluations.
The symbolization of the chief is represented by a fouled anchor with ‘USN’ centered upon it. Officially, the ‘USN’ stands for United States Navy, but according to naval tradition also stand for unity, service and navigation.
“Today we are celebrating more than just the birthday of the chief petty officer,” said Col. Alan L. Thoma, 2nd MLG Chief of Staff. “We are celebrating the reaffirmation of the commitment of the chiefs amongst the Navy rank structure.”
In celebration of the chief petty officer birthday, several chiefs attached with 2nd Marine Logistics Group participated in the raising of morning colors in front of the 2nd MLG Headquarters building, followed by the cutting of an official birthday cake.
“Our job in the Navy is to mentor and lead our junior enlisted sailors, as well as being the manager between the junior enlisted and officers,” said Master Chief Petty Officer Michael J. Roberts, 2nd MLG command master chief. “Our rank is ever-evolving and I like where we are at and the direction we are going.”
