FORT CARSON, Colo.—Soldiers of 4th Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, utilized the Reconfigurable Vehicle Tactical Trainer (RVTT) at the Close Combat Tactical Trainer (CCTT) here to immerse themselves into a virtual battlefield, March 9-13.
The RVTT uses computer systems and simulators to replicate military vehicles along with 360-degrees of wall-to-ceiling projection screens to mimic a combat environment.
The RVTT is ready to serve any unit's convoy training requirements since the reconfigurable system allows Soldiers to virtually drive M998 humvees, M1026 humvees, M977 Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Trucks and M978 HEMTTs.
Dale Stull, computer based trainer / instructor, Computer Sciences Corporation, said the virtual training system offers economical and realistic scenarios designed to familiarize Soldiers with environments from anywhere in the world.
“It saves the unit a lot of money,” said Stull, a former M1 armor crewman who’s worked at the CCTT for eight years. “They don’t have to take their vehicles downrange, pay for fuel and the bullets here only cost a penny to shoot.”
Sgt. William Rochow, squad leader, Company A, 4th BSB, 1st SBCT, 4th Inf. Div., said they’re using the RVTT to introduce Soldiers on how it feels to fire from a machine gun mount and move from battle point to battle point eliminating targets.
“Gunnery only happens maybe once or twice a year so it’s good to get the Soldiers in here so they know how to feels to shoot from a mounted truck,” said Rochow, a native of Minneapolis, Minnesota. “It’s just a great tool to use for familiarization.”
Pfc. Christopher Gray, motor transport operator, Company A, 4th BSB, 1st SBCT, 4th Inf. Div., said that practicing in the video game like RVTT made him feel more proficient.
“I feel safer going into a live-fire exercise now that I’ve done this simulation,” said Gray, native of Evansville, Indiana. “I learned a lot and it was fun at the same time.”
Once the training is complete, the RVTT offers a play-back feature so that the Soldiers can assess their tactics and learn from any mistakes.
