ADAZI MILITARY BASE, Latvia – Service members from Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Germany, Canada, and the United States will participate in the largest iteration of Exercise Summer Shield this month.

“You are here to demonstrate that NATO, a wonderful Allied organization where one nation stands for the others, is a collective effort in order to ensure that no one dares to cross the borders and no one dares to touch upon our sovereignty,” said Gen. Hans-Lothar Domröse, commander of NATO’s Joint Force Command Brunssum, at the opening ceremony, March 22.

The exercise demonstrates their capability to employ a NATO response force in the region.

“Our joint headquarters declared Exercise Summer Shield an open exercise for all NATO nations,” said Latvian Land Forces Maj. Girt Savins, Combat Support Battalion commander and exercise director. “This year we expanded from three nations as it was last year to seven nations this year.”

“This is the first time we have so many nations involved and such a large amount of participation.”

Exercise Summer Shield is designed to enhance the Latvian Land Force’s capacity and capability to integrate fire-and-maneuver at the battalion and brigade level as well as increase NATO militaries’ proficiencies.

“Our main goal is to operate with other partners and NATO Allies,” U.S. Marine Capt. Frank Walker, commanding officer of Weapons Company, Black Sea Rotational Force said.

This year, BSRF provided twice the amount of personnel it did in the previous year.

“We plan well together, and I’m looking forward to getting into execution. We are going to do several live-fire events. We are going to bring in supporting arms to support maneuver, and we are going to exercise multiple battalions falling under a single unified command to exercise command and control,” said Walker.

The exercise is slated to continue until the end of March.
