RAVENNA TRAINING AND LOGISTICS SITE, Ohio — An engineer from the 1194th Engineer Company, Ohio Army National Guard, recently earned the title of distinguished honor graduate at the state’s 145th Regional Training Institute here.

Staff Sgt. Robert Kolodny of Cleveland was recognized with the distinction when he graduated the carpenter training school in March. The carpentry course encompasses three phases — phase one is taught online, while phases two and three are resident courses of two weeks each. During phases two and three, a total of 1400 points can be earned from various quizzes and tests. Kolodny received a score of 1390 of 1400, missing only a single question throughout the course.

“I was originally upset that I got the question wrong,” Kolodny said. “I was positive that I had answered it correctly and had talked to the instructors about it. After further review of the question, I found that my math was off and I had missed the correct answer by one. I apologized to the instructor and admitted my mistake.”
Kolodny’s background helped him to prepare for the military’s carpenter training school. He spent 14 years as a Seabee (engineer) in the Navy.

“Staff Sergeant Kolodny demonstrates superior skills in his [military occupational specialty]. That was demonstrated by this accomplishment,” said 1194th 1st Sgt. Christopher Wisener.

“Kolodny also takes his knowledge and trains the Soldiers that work for him to make sure that they have the same proficiency that he does. He maintains the highest regard and loyalty for his country, state, and unit. He truly is an asset to the 1194th Engineer Company.”

Kolodny said although the school was not easy, instructors were extremely proficient and knowledgeable, answering not only the ‘what’ of students’ questions, but also the ‘why.’

“In 24 years of service, this is, without a doubt, one of the best military schools that I have ever been to,” Kolodny said.
