FORT LEE, Va. - March 27 is the Defense Contract Management Agency's 15th anniversary. This alone is worth celebrating, but I want to start by talking about how historic these years have been.
When we were established, no one knew our first 15 years would be defined by war. Since 2001 two and a half million U.S. service members have deployed to Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere in support of the war on terrorism. Many of us have deployed alongside them, and all of DCMA has supported from home because that’s what we do. This is as real and important as our work will ever be, and all of you have performed superbly. Thank you.
Over the past few decades the work we perform has gone from service-sponsored, in-plant offices (where I served early in my career), to a Defense Logistics Agency command, to finally an independent DoD agency when, on March 27, 2000, a memorandum was signed at the Pentagon creating DCMA.
Many of you have been part of this evolution, and we’re so fortunate to have you. You provide an incredible continuity, and we’ve built this agency on your experience.
In our agency’s lifetime, technology has transformed the contracts we administer — and the very look of our military — with the introduction of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, the MRAP, the Ford-class aircraft carrier, the Reaper and Fire Scout unmanned aerial vehicles, digital camouflage and other once-futuristic programs.
Technology has changed how we work, too. We’re now more connected to our customers than ever before, and programs like DCMA 360 and the Integrated Workflow Management System promise to make us even more agile and efficient.
Today we are 12,000 strong, applying our expertise to $1.9 trillion worth of contracts at more than 1,000 locations around the world. We provide oversight for more than 353,000 contracts — products that in many cases go directly into our warfighters’ hands. We also protect the public’s investment, maximizing the use of tax dollars on programs that put almost $455 million into the national and international economy each day.
So let’s celebrate our continued success – every one of you is important, because the work we do together is essential … and your actionable acquisition insight really matters!
