EAST GREENWICH, R.I. - Staff Sgt. Jose Milan, training noncommissioned officer for the 861st Engineers, fell ill this winter after suffering a brain aneurism. The unit Family Readiness Group took action by planning a pasta dinner fundraising event.
On Thursday at Camp Fogarty in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, the family readiness group presented Milan's brother with the proceeds of the event.
"I didn't expect to see that much on the check," said Raphael Milan, Staff Sgt. Milan's brother. "I thought it might be close to $1,000 but not this."
The pasta dinner raised around $8,000 and after paying for the food the family readiness group was able to give $7,460 to Staff Sgt. Milan's family.
"So many people helped out," said Capt. Jeffrey Nelson, commander of the 861st Engineer Company. "People didn't just come to the dinner, some donated much more than the price of the ticket."
The 861st Engineer Company family readiness group is well known for their commitment to the Soldiers and their families of the unit.
"This is really going to help with the costs," said Raphael Milan to the unit representatives. "My brother is always thinking about you all and it is great to see you are thinking about him."
