JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. – As parents, one of the hardest things to make your kids do is eat their vegetables.

To help with that, service members and their families from the JBLM community received a cooking class sponsored by the Child, Youth & School Services on fun, healthy and nutritious food from a local celebrity, March 21.

Chef LJ Klink, Food Network "Extreme Chef" winner, stressed safety and sanitation in the kitchen with the goal of getting kids to eat healthier.

“The focus today is to make sure the kiddos leave here feeling empowered and they have new thoughts on food,” Klink said. “As parents we go, ‘You gotta eat your vegetables, you gotta eat this, you gotta clean your plate.’"

“Kids don’t always understand why. Hopefully with the parents being here, we’re going to get them to kind of have some common ground to meet when they’re sitting at the dining room table,” Klink added.

Klink started his lesson by talking about unsanitary habits like running fingers through their hair and sneezing or coughing into their hands.

He then grabbed a knife to demonstrate both proper and improper techniques of holding a sharp kitchen utensil.

“We need to learn to hold knives correctly, that way we don’t accidentally hurt someone,” Klink said.

Klink told them a story about a personal experience to drive the point home about the need for safety in the kitchen.

“One time I was stabbed in the arm, because another person was not paying attention to their surroundings and not holding the knife properly,” Klink said. “It hurt, but I was lucky that I was not seriously injured.”

Next, the class conducted a test of the five flavors: Umami, which is described as a savory or meaty taste, bitter, sweet, salt and crunch, using vegetables kids usually don’t want to eat.

The children and parents were then divided into four teams with the intent of building teamwork. Klink gave each team a recipe, and the teams jumped into action.

The kids measured and gathered the ingredients needed to cook the meal. Once everything was ready, they began to cook with the help of the parents.

One by one, the teams completed their creative meals and the children proudly held their heads high over their achievements.

“Chef LJ Klink’s expert cooking knowledge and dynamic presentation skills provided families with a positive outlook on incorporating fruits and vegetables in everyday meals, while promoting healthy and quality family time,” said Chanecia Coney-Belmont, a U.S. Department of Agricultural nutritionist at JBLM.

“This is a great event,” added Tech. Sgt. Matthew Fons, an aircraft mechanic with the 62nd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron. “The best thing though is when they finished cooking ... you could see it in their eyes ... it was like wow, we made this.”
