    II Marine Expeditionary Force

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – Marines with Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, conducted a Fire Team Leader Academy aboard Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, March 16-26, 2015.

The class is designed to sharpen their individual skills so they are able to not only lead Marines, but also instruct them on how to properly conduct themselves as infantryman.

“The Marines in this course have proven themselves to go above and beyond their duties and we have 100 percent confidence in their leadership abilities,” said 1st Lt. Nick Cline, the company executive officer.

This class was offered to everyone. However, the Marines who wanted it the most are the ones that got the seats for the class.

“Some of the individual skills we are sharpening are land navigation, buddy rushes, call for fire, issuing a patrol order, and offensive and defensive operations,” said Sgt. Tuta Xiong, a squad leader with the unit. “They are not really learning anything ‘new,’ they’re just learning how and why to do things from a leader’s perspective.”

The Marines with Fox Company spent the first week in the classroom rehashing some of the skills it takes to be in the infantry. They spent the next week in the field putting their leadership roles to the test and conducted countless practical exercises.

“The Marines are conducting different operations in the team leader role,” said Cline, a Houston native. “They will go out on a patrol as the squad leader and then once the patrol ends, another patrol will start with a new squad leader.”

With the senior Marines in the unit moving on to different duty stations or plan on getting out of the Marine Corps, it’s up to these Marines to step-up and take charge, said Xiong, a St. Paul, Minnesota, native.

“We are training the trainers,” said Cline. “We are teaching them how to be leaders, but we also are making sure they have the individual skills required to be in that leadership position.”

The unit plans on having these young leaders ready to take charge for their next deployment, no matter the destination.
