FORT HOOD, Texas – Fort Hood welcomed 63 Soldiers after completing their mission in Liberia in support of Operation United Assistance, Joint Forces Command- United Assistance.

The 36th Engineer Brigade Soldiers conducted an uncasing ceremony, March 23, at the Starker Physical Fitness Center, here.

The Soldiers completed 21 days of controlled monitoring at the North Fort Hood area as a precaution before returning to their families and the Fort Hood/Killeen community to ensure they had not contracted Ebola during the deployment.

Some of the activities the Soldiers did to pass the time were: keeping up with their physical readiness, sergeants time training and self development, said Sgt. 1st Class Jordy Anthony, a Lafayette, La., native, and the Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention representative for Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 36th Eng., Bde.

“It feels great to be back,” said Sgt. Austin Lumpkin, a Belle Chase, La., native. “My Family came and surprised me by coming to the ceremony and I usually go home and surprise them. I didn’t know that they were coming.”

Lumpkin, of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 62nd Engineer Battalion, 36th Eng., Bde., said the highlight of the deployment was being a part of a high profile mission, making a difference and warm weather throughout the deployment.

The Fort Hood Engineer Soldiers had elements of the brigade in Liberia in mid-October from various units within the brigade, from two Army bases, and subordinate units attached to them, said Col. Heath Roscoe, commander for the 36th Eng., Bde.

The rates of infections in September were around 50 to 60 per day, said Roscoe.

“Last week, Liberia was Ebola free for a period of more than 20 days,” said Roscoe. “I am very proud of the work the Soldiers did in Liberia. I am also proud of our Fort Hood community, our rear detachment, and the strength of our Family Readiness Group. You all provided great support for our deployed Soldiers and their families.”
