KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany – The inaugural Kaiserslautern Comicon is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 28, at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center Food Count on Ramstein Air Base. This family event is something not to miss.

The comicon is the brain child of Staff Sgt. Andre B. Corbin, a platoon sergeant with 21st Theater Sustainment Command support operations. He has been collecting comic books featuring super heroes among other adventurous topics since boyhood.

“I learned to read from comic books,” he said. “My parents gave me 50 cents and I would buy 10 of them. Fifty cents went a long way back then.”

Comic books from every generation will be displayed for human interest and potential sale during the comicon. In geek terms, there will be comics ranging from Kid Colt and Archie to 2014 X-Men and Punisher.

Corbin said the comicon serves several purposes.

“I want kids of all ages to come, have fun, and learn that there is more to superheroes than just watching the movies,” he said. “I hope children get excited about reading when they see the original super hero comic books from the past. Reading invites each person into the world of imagination.”

Along with comic books, there will be a number of other activities, including face painting and a costume contest; contestants compete in three age categories: 0-12, 13-18, and 19 and above. The prize packet for the winners includes movie tickets to the KMCC movie theater, t-shirts, super hero coasters and wristbands. “Costumes will be judged on authenticity, originality, crowd appeal and craftsmanship,” said Corbin.

Local collectors and vendors will also participate in the event.

“I hope that this event will also be an opportunity to form friendships between us and members of our host nation,” said Corbin. “This is an opportunity for us to connect with others who have common interests and hobbies.

Corbin hopes for a strong showing at the inaugural comicon. He also hopes this event will create momentum for even larger ventures in the future.

He invites personnel from all services and family members to don costumes and join the fun.
