    II Marine Expeditionary Force

BOSTON - Marines from II Marine Expeditionary Force and U.S. Marine Forces Command Marines from Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia participated in a volunteer opportunity at Cradles to Crayons during their liberty time while in Boston March 17, 2015.

While at Cradles to Crayons, Marines were charged with several tasks, including sorting clothing into their prospective categories, prepping the clothing into ‘clothing packs’ and putting together orders for the needs of local children.

“Cradles to Crayons serves children in need across Massachusetts from birth to 12 years old with the everyday essentials they need to thrive at school, home and at play,” said Angela Martano, corporate engagement associate with Cradles to Crayons and a Plantsville, Connecticut Native. “We are able to do this by connecting the communities that have with the communities that need.”

Massachusetts is considered a small state, but with more than 300,000 kids living in poverty or homelessness across the state, organizations like Cradles to Crayons are extremely impactful in aiding and supporting that demographic.

With only 30 staff members, Cradles to Crayons is primarily operated by volunteers and has an average of more than 30,000 people volunteering annually.

“The clothes are sorted and thoroughly inspected so that when the kids get them, they feel really awesome about themselves,” Martano said. “Being able to provide that for a child is why I am here.”

Cradles to Crayons receives requests from many different organizations from the surrounding area with specific requests from the children there. As they receive these orders, they are adamant about filling the order properly so that when the child receives their package they can utilize everything in it.

“While we were here today we were able to fill the orders for the needs of many children from the surrounding area,” said Mario E. Contreras, a motor transport mechanic with 2nd Maintenance Battalion. “Being able to help people who are less fortunate, especially children, is a great feeling. Knowing that these packages will impact their lives is amazing and I highly recommend participation in opportunities like this.”
