AL ASAD AIR BASE, Iraq - U.S. Marines and sailors with Combat Service Support Team, Task Force Al Asad, tested water from a newly functioning well aboard Al Asad Air Base, Iraq, March 3, 2015.

If the new well has no contaminants it will be used to help support coalition forces, as well as the Iraqi Army, Iraqi Air Force, and other small tribal groups.

“What this new well does for us is frees up a lot of things,” said 1st Lt. Christopher Emde, the Combat Service Support Team officer in charge, Task Force Al Asad. “It frees up security, the use of our generator, and the use of some of our vehicles.”

At the old well, the Marines used their generator to pump water because the permanent one broke.

Whenever the generator was taken to the well, the Marines provided security and their own vehicles to help support the task, said Emde. The new well uses its own generator, allowing Iraqi forces to retrieve their own water without the help of Marines.

A team of Marines drove to the new well site to bring back water for testing.

“By getting the well tested it can [help] the base,” said Emde. “This should help alleviate any kind of problem the base was having.”

After retrieving the water, the Marines took it to the preventative medical technician to be tested for chlorine, forms of bacteria and its PH levels.

“We test the water for PH levels or traces of chlorine to find out if the water is acidic or alkaline,” said Seaman Steven J. Madson, a preventative medicine technician with Task Force Al Asad. “We also run weekly checks on the base’s water for bacteria.”

The PH level and chlorine tests showed no negative signs; meaning the water is safe for cleaning, bathing, and hygiene needs.

U.S. Marines and sailors with Task Force Al Asad continue to improve base living standards and train, advise and assist Iraqi forces in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.
